Author Guidelines

The Frontiers in Food, Drug and Natural Sciences (FDNS) publishes original research papers, expedited communications, short communications/case reports/technical reports, review articles, and correspondence related to research, education, and practical aspects of food and drug science. Materials submitted to the journal must not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication in another journal, other than in abstract form.

Submission must be made online using this website. Only manuscripts in ".doc" format will be accepted ("pdf" files are not acceptable)

Conflict of interest

All authors are requested to disclose any actual or potential conflict of interest including any financial, personal, or other relationships with other people or organizations within three years of beginning the submitted work that could inappropriately influence, or be perceived to influence, their work. Authors must declare any such conflict in the cover letter accompanying the manuscript and in the Acknowledgments section of the manuscript itself. Permissions

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for online- and also for print format- and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their manuscript. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

Preparation of manuscripts

Please write your text in good English (American or British usage is accepted, but not a mixture of these). Submission to this journal proceeds totally online and you will be guided stepwise through the creation and uploading of your files.

The manuscript should be typed, and double-spaced with at least a 2.5 cm margin on each side in Microsoft Word 2007 (or 2010 and 2013) format (Times New Roman 12). The text should be in single-column format. Each page of the manuscript should be numbered. Pages should be numbered consecutively throughout the paper. To avoid unnecessary errors you are strongly advised to use the 'spell-check' and 'grammar-check' functions of your word processor.

  • Each manuscript should have:
  1. Title page
  2. Research highlights
  3. Manuscript main file [with figure(es) /image(es) and table(es) if necessary]
  4. Copyright release form

Details for the title page

Please use the template of the journal to write your title page *Click here*

  • The full title of the manuscript: The title of the manuscript should unambiguously reflect its contents. The title of the manuscript should be written in bold, Times New Roman 16, and not more than 140 characters (including spaces). Avoid abbreviations and formulae where possible;
  • A short running title of the manuscript should be written in bold, Times New Roman 12, and not more than 45 characters (including spaces);
  • Name(s) of author(s) and academic address(es): Name(s) of author(s) and academic address(es) should be written in bold, Times New Roman 12. Where the family name may be ambiguous (e.g., a double name), please indicate this clearly. Present the authors' affiliation addresses (where the actual work was done) below the names. Indicate all affiliations with a lower-case superscript letter immediately after the author's name and in front of the appropriate address. Provide the full postal address of each affiliation, including the country name and, if available, the e-mail address of each author. Name(s) of the author(s) should be in bold;
  • Corresponding author: The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. Give full designation, mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and email address.

Details for the manuscript main file

Please use the template of the journal  to write your manuscript main file *Click  here*

This must not contain details of the authors or their affiliations.  The manuscript should start with the full title, followed by an abstract of not more than 250 words, followed by 5-7 keywords.  Keywords should be alphabetized and separated by semicolons (;).  The main body of the text should begin on the second page. Section heading should be used as follows:

Original research papers: the headings introduction, materials & methods, results & discussion, conclusions, acknowledgment(s), and references.

Expedited Communications: the headings introduction, material & methods, results & discussion, conclusions, acknowledgments, and references.

Short communications/case reports/technical notes: should be written (up to 2500 words) with an Abstract, but not divided up into other conventional sections. Short communications/case reports/technical notes should be written with no more than 20 references.

Reviews: the format is flexible, but should have an introductionmain body, and conclusions. The main body can be divided into subsections at the author's discretion. Review papers will be accepted in areas of topical interest, will normally focus on literature published over the previous ten years.

Additional information for main text writing:

  • Subdivision - numbered sections: Divide your article into clearly defined and numbered sections. Subsections should be written in italic and numbered 1.1 (then 1.1.1, 1.1.2, ...), 1.2, etc. (the abstract is not included in section numbering). Use this numbering also for internal cross-referencing: do not just refer to 'the text'. Any subsection may be given a brief heading. Each heading should appear on its own separate line.
  •  Text lines must be numbered continuously.
  • Where abbreviations are used, the first use of the abbreviation should be preceded by the full term.  Generic names for pharmaceuticals should be used, with the trade name in parentheses if required. SI units must be used.  Scientific names of organisms should be given in italics e.g., Persian sturgeon (Acipenserpersicus). In later citations, the genus may be abbreviated, e.g., Whitesturgeon(A. transmontanus).

Acknowledgments

Acknowledgments should be given at the end of the text, and should include:

  • contributions that need acknowledging but do not justify authorship.
  • acknowledgments to technical help, and
  • acknowledgments of financial and material support

References

Citation in text

Please ensure that every reference cited in the text is also present in the reference list  (and vice versa). Unpublished results and personal communications are not recommended in the text and reference list.

All publications cited in the text should be presented in a  list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's surname (without initials) and year of publication:

  • “… Hosseini and Zakavi (2019) and DeWitt et al. (2023)  studied the  influence of ...”
  •  “... similar to values reported by others  (Anderson et al., 1990; Aubourg, 1990;  Kyrana & Lougovois, 2015; Børresen et al., 2020). …”
  • …. “The effect of CO2-enriched atmospheres on both the bacterial flora and chemical parameters during refrigerated storage of common sole were studied by Lόpez-Gálvez et al. (1998)”. ... or “The trimethylamine (TMA) content was measured using the method described by Han et al. (2018) and expressed as mg TMA-N/100 g fish muscle.”

The list of references in the text should be arranged alphabetically Aubourg, 2017; Hosseini et al., 2020; Klomklao et al., 2019; Nalan et al., 2013; Shahidi & Wanasundara, 1992a,b; Velazquez & Borderías, 2021), and then further sorted chronologically if necessary. More than one reference from the same author(s) in the same year must be identified by the letters 'a', 'b', 'c', etc., placed after the year of publication (Hosseini, 2019a,b).

How to write refernec at the "Reference" section:

Reference to a journal publication:

Tahergorabi, R., Beamer, S. K., Matak, K. E., & Jaczynski, J. (2012). Functional food products made from fish protein isolate recovered with isoelectric solubilization/precipitation. LWT-Food Science and Technology, 48(1), 89-95.

Reference to a book:

Kirk, R. S., & Sawyer, R. (1991). Pearson’s composition and analysis of foods (9th ed.). London: Longman Scientific and Technical.

NRC, National Research Council (1993). Nutrient requirements of fish. USA, Washington DC: National Academy Press.

Reference to a chapter in an edited book:

Mettam, G. R., & Adams, L. B. (2009). How to prepare an electronic version of your article. In B. S. Jones, & R. Z. Smith (Eds.), Introduction to the electronic age (pp. 281–304). New York: E-Publishing Inc.

Web references: As a minimum, the full URL should be given and the date when the reference was last accessed. Any further information, if known (DOI, author names, dates, reference to a source publication, etc.), should also be given. Web references can be listed separately (e.g., after the reference list) under a different heading if desired, or can be included in the reference list.

Example:  FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations). Fisheries and Aquaculture Department. Assessment and management of seafood safety and quality. Available at  http://www.fao.org/docrep/006/y4743e/y4743e00.htm. Accessed 22.09.2013

Reference management software

Our journal has a standard template available in key reference management packages (with slight modifications).  This covers packages using the  Citation  Style  Language, such as  Mendeley  (http://www.mendeley.com/features/reference-manager)  and also others like  EndNote  (http://www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp)  and  Reference  Manager (http://refman.com/support/rmstyles.asp).

When preparing your manuscript, you will then be able to select this style using the Mendeley plugins for Microsoft Word or LibreOffice. For more information about the Citation Style Language, visit http://citationstyles.org.

 Additional information for reference writing:

  • The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of author's names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list.
  • Where appropriate the manuscript must be accompanied by copies of permission to reproduce published material or to use illustrations of identifiable persons.

Images/photographs, Figures (Graphs), and tables

Images/photographs must be in TIFF or JPG format with a minimum resolution of 300×300 dpi and must be uploaded as separate files.  Figures (Graphs), diagrams, and tables should be embedded within the word document (as Microsoft Word 2007 format or as separate Microsoft Excel files) and or listed at the end of the references in the main manuscript. The placement of tables, figures, and images should be marked in the manuscript if they are not present in the main text.

Additional information for figures/images and tables preparation

Table preparation:

  • To prepare the tables, use only horizontal lines, no vertical or diagonals should be used.
  • The title should be typed above each table, explaining in full all abbreviations and units used. Brief explanatory footnotes, if required, should be indicated with lower case superscript letters and typed at the bottom of the tables.

Figure preparation:

  • A brief title should be typed under each figure, clearly explaining all symbols and abbreviations depicted in the figures.

Photograph preparation:

  • Photographs should be selected only to illustrate something that cannot adequately be displayed in any other manner; they should be in original enlargements and preferably in the form of glossy black and white prints.

Details for Copyright (COPYRIGHT RELEASE FORM)

COPYRIGHT RELEASE FORM should be physically signed by the Corresponding author and a scanned copy emailed to the journal. This form will be retained by the FDNS for administrative purposes.

  • Note: FDNS is an open-access journal and will be distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.

Reviewers
Authors may suggest up to 3 reviewers and indicate up to 3 reviewers by whom they may not wish to have their manuscripts reviewed.  There is no guarantee that the manuscripts would be sent to the suggested reviewers, however, manuscripts will not be sent to reviewers whom the authors have suggested to avoid.

Additional information

  • Abbreviations for units should follow the suggestions of the British Standards publication BS 1991. The full stop should not be included in abbreviations, e.g. m (not m.), ppm (not p.p.m.), % and '/' should be used in preference to 'per cent' and 'per'. Where abbreviations are likely to cause ambiguity or may not be readily understood by an international readership, units should be put in full.
  • The 24-hour clock should be used as time of day, eg. 13.45 h, not 1.45 pm.
  • Current recognized (IUPAC) chemical nomenclature should be used, although commonly accepted trivial names may be used where there is no risk of ambiguity.
  • The use of proprietary names should be avoided. Papers essentially of an advertising nature will not be accepted.

 Authorship

Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for the contents of the paper submitted. Participation solely in the collection of data does not justify authorship.

Page charges

Article-processing charges are only made if an article is accepted for publication (there is no charge for submission). The corresponding author can pay the fee (300 USD $;  but, up to three issue will be free of charge) by contacting to Managing Editor to make a direct transfer.

The payment procedure will be notified to the author through e-mail after the successful review process. Prompt payment is advised as the article will not be published until payment is received.
